It is said that a good angle can make a big difference for a photo. This applies to all kind of subjects. Lighting is also a consideration. I do agree that reference photo can really contribute for great results. It could enhance the result of the work and meet at its par excellence.

Well written, you are right, reference is a good thing to start a better portrait painting, after each painting the question is, are you satisfied to your art work? If you are, then it's a good painting.

Well its really true that you cannot paint well if you don't have a reference when doing a portrait painting. It will be much easy if you take a picture of it because the angles, the light and other environmental factors might affects your masterpiece.

Very true, if you want your painting to be always great or at least if you want to be satisfied in your art work, establishing your angles and lighting qualities and more importantly having a reference photo on-hand. A reference photo is important when your subject is live models like human and animals.
